EJ22 in a T3 - Problem for importing?

Post by Bjoern »

Hey,

I will move to Norway in August.
Unfortunatly my JX died a few days ago.

I want to exchange it for a EJ22, is this going to be a problem if I try to import it to Norway?

Greetings,
Björn

Depends, normally if a car is approved in Germany it will not be a problem, i know one Golf mk2 pickup that went that way.

Will probably not be a problem from other countries, and what you want do do can even be approved in Norway...

I'm from northern germany (close to Hamburg) but right now I live in Karlsruhe.

There's no water close by, turned out that that is a real problem for me...

This sounds good, so I will go on and exchange my Engine with an EJ22.
I'm only a little bit worried about your taxes for importing, they are quite high.

The taxes are wery limeted for old cars, if its over 30yrs old its a "veteran" and the taxes are almost nothing. I dont think any T3 will be a expensive car to import, espesially when you are moving with the car...

Like Renax says, if the car (and the New engine) has been approved i Germany, it should not be any big trouble importing it.

If the engine transplant is not approved and not documented in the german papers for the car you will have some issues that you need to document when importing it, as the import tax is calculated from engine displacement and horsepower.

But you must ask yourself how much this exact car is Worth to you? Prices for T3's are generally quite a lot higher in Germany than in Norway, so if this is just a regular Transporter/Caravelle that you havent put a lot of modification work into, it might be best to sell it in Germany and buy another one here in Norway. You could easily get a 2wd Caravelle here for nothing more than the import cost of Your car.

I don't really want to buy a bus in Norway.

In the first few month I will propably be very busy with moving etc, so I won't have time to search a new Bus.

Here, I have the time and tools to fix my bus and make sure it is actually working and there won't be any nasty surprises.
Everytime you buy a bus you buy a surprise - even if everything is running good in the beginning, you might stumple upon a disaster a few days later.

I rebuild my entire bus, so I know about its problems (and there should be none left prior to importing it).

Tax is now a new problem and I guess I have to rethink everything.
Before, I had a Bus with an exchange engine where noone knew how old it was.
Thus, worth was around 2000-4000, depending on who did the certificate. If it would be 2000€ worth, taxes would be around 3000€ I think and that might be worth it.
Once I rebuild it to a EJ22 (or 2E) and do a new paintjob it will probably be worth a LOT more.

I might just trade the Bus to my brother, move to norway, get the Bus back to Germany and sell it here.

Still, I need to get a new engine into it, right now i would maybe get 1000€.
To be fair, with the new engine my car's worth will probably go up to 6000€ or even more.
Right now, T3 prizes are skyrocketing in germany.
I bought it 2011 for 1000€ with a High Roof, JX, 3H, Campingstuff and had to invest 2500€ to get it rustfree and change to a folding roof.

I really don't know yet what I will do once I move to Norway.

Remember, it's possible to drive on German license plates, for a temporary period of 2 year.
