Driving lights (kjørelys, 1987, 2.1l, 112 HP)

Post by xavi »

Hi Guys,
Yesterday when I started the car the driving lights (kjørelys) didn´t switch on. (1987, 2.1l, 112 HP) Only the parking lights came up. Low beam and the high beam worked fine on using the switch. I have checked the bulbs and they are fine. What could be the reason? Defect relay perhaps? Guys, any suggestions.
Thanks.

I'd certainly check the relay first, for sure. Especially since everything else works.

Thanks Alf for a quick reply. Where is the relay located? Is it one of those in the fuse box? If yes which one?
Kind regards.

On the other hand... you may not have a driving light relay. If so, there is a shunt connection behind the fuse box that might be the problem. If I could only remember the colors of the wires... there are several shunt connectors behind the fuse box. Look for the biggest diameter wires and signs of overheating, is the best I can come up with right now. Sorry!

Most probably the ignition lock and the x contact. Check if your wipers works.
If not then it's problems with the x cable supply

Tried to get hold of a new relay at my local VW dealer. No luck. Even Møller
can´t help. Checked the wires behind the fuse box. Everything is intact. No sign of overheating.
The wipers works fine. All systems are OK except for the driving lights. Any idea where can I get hold of a new relay?
Is there any way of testing the relay?

The driving light relay is a double "normally closed" relay. It gets its signal from the parking light cirquit, and actally switches off the driving lights when parking lights are turned on. So it should klick when the parking light is switched on. That is the first to check. Then, take out the relay. Measure between 30 and 87 on the relay and then between 30 and 87a. You should have a connection between both when the relay has no external signal in. Then measure on 30 in the relay holder. Black/Yellow wire. With ignition on you should have 12V there. It gets the power from the "X" contact in the ignition via fuse 12 (same as rear wiper). All this according to the wiring diagram.

I see now that there are some differences in the wiring diagram for the driving lights, regarding model year, and whether you have headlight washers or not, so the info in my previous post regarding fuse 12 may or may not be correct for your car. However, check the 30 terminal in the relay holder anyways, it should have a black/yellow wire whatever wiring you have. On some cars this wire comes directly from the headlight switch, so you may want to trace it from there.

I just removed my driving lights relay. Lots of traces of overheating on the wires. So I also recommend throwing it out..

I have actually removed the whole driving lights circuit. It only causes problems anyway. And the light it gives is rubbish.

Thanks Guys for all the suggestions and the tips. I really appreciate it. I have checked all the fuses and the wires behind the fuse box.
No sign of overheating, burned wires or melted fuses. I opted for the easiest solution like some of you Guys. Took out the relay. I better
get used to using the light switch like old times. Yes and I too have noticed that switching on the low beam gives a much better light than
the driving lights. Thanks Guys. Kind regards and take care.

That is probably the best solution anyways.

Better light is because there is a resistor in one of the wires in the driving light cirquit. Only advantage with that is that the bulbs get so low voltage that they never burn out.

The wire that is black with Yellow line is an resistance wire that lover the voltage to the bulbs. Gives less light But makes them last longer. The black and yellow wire can get hot and cause problems. Advise to disconnect all wires to daylight system and just get used to turn your lights on and of.
